FAQ: Costs, practices, clients

What do you do and how do you charge — by the hour, and if so what are your rates?

Most of the time, I work by the project. Typical projects:

Focus is on strategy and intelligent planning, brand and message, content marketing, search engine marketing, persona development.

Key to these offerings is that I have a very structured methodology that makes extensive use of the company principals’ and customer-facing employees’ own understanding, to vastly increase speed and reduce costs of reaching insights. For some startups, who do not yet have a market, we need some research (which the startups can often conduct themselves).

Because of the structured methodologies, costs are a lot less than a traditional marketing agency.

I also work at an hourly rate for many clients.

Where are your clients?

Worldwide! With the Internet, I can address clients’ needs remotely via Skype, GoToMeeting, etc. I have clients in Germany, England, China, Austria, Poland, Australia, India, as well as the United States and Canada. I am located in Silicon Valley, in California.

What kind of clients do you serve?

Mostly business-to-business, but I have a pretty wide range and have a couple of consumer clients. My clients’ businesses include software sales, software consulting services, enterprise business services, IT services, specialty retail, high-tech equipment and hardware, and IT training. Clients range from 3-5000 employees and revenues from under $1M to over $1B.

Do you have a client list you can share?

I presently (2017) have about 35 clients. I am not permitted to name most of them but here’s a pretty good picture:

I have done a lot of work with Atlassian and their Partners. Atlassian is a $450M developer of enterprise software for software development and team collaboration (best known are JIRA, Confluence, Hipchat): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlassian.

The Atlassian Partners provide software development services and product, mainly for enterprises. I can’t disclose names without permission but here are two that have allowed me to share, and who will provide testimonials:

I did persona development for West Marine, a $700 M specialty retailer with 300 retail stores.

I am on retainer for Network Development Group: They develop Linux training and advanced training appliances for IT (corp and academia).

My last non-consulting employment experience was as Executive Director of Internet Marketing for Maxim Integrated ($2.5 B semiconductor manufacturer)
